Walk toward your own light

We have all heard of mission and vision statements. Typically, these terms are used to describe the ultimate goals of an organization or business of some sort. Have you ever considered writing your own, personal mission and vision statements? Most people don’t consider doing so because their lives are such that they can only look at themselves in compartments. Sometimes this is all we feel we can do. We operate, far too often, in survival mode.

The company you work for surely has some type of mission/vision statement. Since you are an employee, you are expected to adopt or accept it in order to help them move forward toward achieving their stated goals. If they are excellent leaders, they will spend time talking to you about how your own vision synthesizes with that of the organization. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case. Check out this article or this one.

Family life is a wonderful, multi-headed monster that threatens to wear you down if you don’t tackle it in manageable chunks. Maintaining a positive relationship with your spouse is a journey that is both challenging and rewarding. It’s important to find a balance between your wants and needs. This can be difficult, since your significant other has requirements and desires as well.

If you have children, you are well aware that their wants and needs quickly become most important. Your ego must take a back seat to your responsibility to raise them to be amazing people. This can be difficult early on, as you are making the transition from appropriately selfish to appropriately selfless. Guess what!?! You can actually do both. In all of these compartments, you can achieve a healthy balance that not only prevents overload but increases your success all around.

Have you ever considered creating a mission/vision statement for any of the aforementioned parts of your life? Better yet, have you thought of what it would be like to create all-encompassing, life changing, mission and vision statements to help guide you toward your goals. You can achieve success professionally, as a partner, as a parent, and still feel fulfilled personally. It’s true.

The first step is to commit to WRITING IT DOWN! I know, that sounds tedious and time-consuming. However, if you are serious about it, you will want to document your commitment, so that it is real. Sure, you can continue to try to keep it in your head but just as you misplace your keys, forget appointments, etc. you will forget this. So, YOU DECIDE! Are you ready?

The next step is to make a list of your values. What do you believe? What’s important to you? How do you want to be seen? How do you want to be treated and how will you treat others. This list will become your filter. These are the “nonnegotiables” that define you and shape how you make decisions and live your life.

Your GOALS are a natural extension of your values. What do you want to achieve in life? There are different types of goals.  Check out Ready, Set, Goals!!! from http://www.sonfasuperhero.com to learn about goal-setting, long-term, and short-term goals.

Mission and Vision are two different things. A mission explains what you intend to accomplish. It is essentially a list of over-arching, complex goals that will lead you to your vision. A vision explains what it will look like when you accomplish your goals. It’s your destination, your utopia. This is the greener grass we all seek. It’s easier to get to when you have a written plan. Those who take the time to create personal mission and vision statements excel in all of the components that make up this thing called life. Just remember, it’s hard to smile in survival mode.
