Whenever you decide to do things differently than what is widely accepted, you will face the insecurity of others. Change is a difficult thing to for many of us to accept with an open mind. Safety and security are such cherished concepts that we will often attack anything that does not immediately meet the criteria we have set-up in our minds. This isn’t anyone’s fault really, it’s a survival mechanism.
So, what do you do when you are faced with the effects of insecurity from those who are close to you? It is completely counterproductive to engage in or reflect their feelings. They can handle their reactions just fine on their own. Your responsibility lies in your understanding of the responsibility you have taken on, when you decided to be “different”. We usually engage in alternative paths in order to gain a sense of personal freedom. If you find yourself on a mission to spite someone else, STOP immediately. There is no reward to be had in this situation. Your intentions must be pure and aligned with your innermost beliefs and values.
Once you are sure you have chosen the right path for you, it’s time to examine the effects your decisions will have on others. It may be that you need to modify your vision somewhat. Let’s face it, we don’t live on this planet alone. If your decisions are having a negative impact on those you love, you should consider tweaking them a bit. However, there are some, beloved or not, who will refuse to accept your choices or reasoning. DO NOT waste your time attempting to justify yourself to those who have already decided you are wrong. This will only weaken your resolve and thwart your efforts toward realizing your vision. It is not your responsibility to please everyone. IT IS your responsibility to follow through with every ounce of your being. IT IS your responsibility to hold yourself up when no one else sees why they should get involved. Accept your responsibility with as much conviction as you accept the freedom that you seek.
